Loganville, Georgia, is reeling from killings that left four young children and their father dead, another child injured, and the mother in custody.
All the children in the Loganville home appeared to be under the age of 10. Their father appeared to be in his mid-30s.
Authorities say the mother, who has not been charged with a crime, called 911 at 4:47 a.m. Police told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the woman spoke Spanish, which initially made it difficult for 911 operators to communicate with her, according to the AP.
The mother was taken into custody and was being interviewed by Gwinnett County police.
Jim Hollandsworth, a spokesman for a nonprofit that runs an after-school program the family’s children participated in, said the family had been in the community for a few months.
“It’s awful. It’s devastating. Everyone is in complete shock,” he said. “The kids … were happy. They were fantastic kids with a bright future.”
